Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is an infection of the urinary system which comprises the bladder, kidneys and urethra. It is very common and easy to treat but if not treated promptly spreads the infection to the kidneys with serious implications. This infection is mostly caused by the bacteria E.coli but other bacteria can be the culprit.
Symptoms of UTI include frequent urge to urinate but passing only small quantities, cloudy, milky or red urine and a burning sensation when passing urine. More serious symptoms are fever, chills, nausea, vomiting and constant low back pain. Conventionally, an antibiotic is used to treat UTI. Alternative treatments for UTI are:
1. Juice therapy. Based on the premise that drinking lots of fluid is the best way of flushing out bacteria. Studies have shown that drinking eight classes of this cranberry juice will treat a simple UTI infection. It works by preventing the adherence of bacteria to the urinary tract.
2. Herbal Therapy. Uva ursi (bearberry) and goldenseal root are two herbs used in the treatment of urinary tract infections. Uva ursi has antiseptic properties but has some side effects that include nausea, ringing in the ears, oddly colored urine or indigestion. Other herbs that may be useful include marshmallow root, corn silk, horse tail, cleaver, usnea lichen and buchu.
3. Acupuncture. Studies have shown that this may be a useful treatment for UTI.
4. Hydrotherapy. It is another natural remedy for UTI that includes drinking plenty of water and taking special baths.
5. Apiol. This is an organic compound found in celery and parsley seeds. It has antiseptic properties and works by preventing bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract.
6. Apple cider vinegar. This is a natural antibiotic. It does not taste great but honey can be added.
7. Homeopathic treatment is also used in the treatment of urinary tract infections.
